VENUS-C is a project funded under the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission with a view to develop, test and deploy a highly scalable and flexible cloud computing infrastructure. This is done in order to enhance the activities of European researchers and SMEs in Europe .

The Venus-C platform is based on Windows Azure, the resources of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, Sweden), the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC, Spain), Microsoft’s European data centres and the Engineering Group’s data centre. Azure offers a multi-layer solution, including computing and storage power, a development environment and immediate service offering. VENUS-C develops Cloud applications in ten thematic areas: biomedicine, architecture, civil engineering, civil protection, emergency situations, marine biodiversity data, information technology, medicine, maths, physics, SMEs, earth science, biology and biodiversity.

Within this project, Eurokleis analysed the potential legal barriers of Cloud Computing infrastructure for science and research in Europe. The company also developed a preliminary analysis of socio-economic and technological sustainability of the Cloud Computing infrastructure. The sustainability analysis demonstrated the high technical quality of the project and the potential socio-economic impact of the project for European scientific research communities.
